Join Creative Barnsley at the Digital Media Centre on Wednesday February 23rd at 6.00pm for the second Girl Geek Dinner South Yorkshire (SoYo).

In the vein of successful Girl Geek Dinners from across the UK and beyond, this event is another great opportunity to bring together women working and studying in the creative, digital and technology sectors across the region.
We have two fabulous speakers for the evening.

Karen Johnson, is producer and director with Turmeric Media an independent production company specialising in TV and online video for CBeebies and BBC Learning.  Karen Johnson is an original girl geek (ie buyer of her first Spectrum in 1982) which came in handy when she eventually took over BBC Bitesize, the study resource for GCSE students. She spent 17 years working for the BBC making schools and pre-school TV, radio and online content for children and teenagers. Nominated by the RTS for documentaries on drugs and on Kenya, she has received the FIAT international prize for Civil Rights in the USA. Her last BBC post was Commissioning Editor for Children's Learning which she left in 2006 'to be a better mother'! In 2008, together with fellow director Uzma Mir-Young, Karen set up Turmeric Media Ltd specialising in TV and online video for CBeebies and BBC Learning. She was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2008. We are utterly delighted that she is now based right here in Barnsley!

Sydney Padua is the hugely talented graphic artist who has made online comic strip heroes of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage. In her hands, the founders of the digital age are imaged as an intrepid and ridiculously intelligent dynamic duo in a computer-based costume drama of epic proportions - and no small wit. Read her webcomic 2dgoggles.com. Sydney also works in 2D and 3D animation for television and films. One of her recent major projects was the 2010 remake of Ray Harryhausen's Clash of the Titans. She's also worked on the Golden Compass, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and The Iron Giant. Sydney's combined skills of high-tech graphic artist and classic storyteller make her a compelling champion of Girl Geekery.

The event includes:

  • Welcome drinks and informal networking
  • An extended invitation to the preview of d:space at 5pm
  • Dinner (please indicate dietary requirements when booking)
  • Presentations from our amazing speakers Sydney Padua and Karen Johnson.
  • Opportunity to network with Geek Girls Allowed members and tap into what's happening in the geeky girlie world of Sheffield and South Yorkshire

Places are FREE however we reserve the right to charge an administration fee for tickets booked but 'don't show'. If you book a ticket please let us know if you are unable to attend. Men are welcome if accompanied by a girl geek!

Please use the hashtag #ggdsoyo for the event and follow @cr8tvebarnsley and @girlgeeksoyo on Twitter for regular news and musings about the creative sector.
